The EcoCentre project is a proposed conceptual design for a sustainability hub in Markham, Ontario. Our team was excited to collaborate with Regenesis - York University Chapter and get involved in a project that could influence and inspire the next generation of design students.

The EcoCentre aims to provide a space for sustainability education, community events, and sustainability services such as recycling, bike repairs, and tool loans. The goal is to create a sustainability landmark that will remind and inspire the next generation.

Markham presently lacks in sustainability infrastructure and engagement so the project site is nestled between a high school, a university campus, and a bike route. The center is laid out as a compact interconnected honeycomb shape, which both creates a gradation of space while minimizing the surface area for energy conservation and material efficiency. The building is oriented North-South, with a dramatic and sloping roof that draws daylight deep into the space.
